An acceptance letter from a DLI does not by itself establish eligibility for a study permit or a PGWP. Check your exact institution, program and circumstances.

01

Before your application

Choose your education with the next chapter in mind. Admission and immigration are separate processes, and each has its own requirements.

  • Designated Learning Institutions and college or university admissions
  • International student admission requirements and program selection
  • Provincial or Territorial Attestation Letters (PAL/TAL), including applicable exemptions
  • Quebec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ) requirements for Quebec studies
  • Financial documentation, tuition planning and proof of funds
  • Study permit preparation and supporting explanations
02

While you study

Your permit comes with conditions. Understand the current rules before changing institutions, taking leave, or starting work.

  • Study permit extensions, restoration and status maintenance
  • Changing schools or programs and when a new permit application is needed
  • Working while studying and off-campus work conditions
  • Required student placements: eligible post-secondary students no longer require a separate co-op permit from April 1, 2026; secondary students still do
  • Bringing family members and separate spousal work permit eligibility
  • Health insurance, housing, travel and settlement planning
03

When plans change

A refusal or change in circumstances deserves a careful review of the reasons and available next steps, rather than a repeat of the same application.

  • Study permit refusals and reapplication considerations
  • Restoration is conditional and is not an automatic extension
  • Post-graduation planning and checking PGWP eligibility early
  • Maintaining a record of enrolment, transcripts and permit conditions
Preparation, considered

Frequently asked questions.

Can every Canadian program lead to a PGWP?

No. DLI status and PGWP eligibility are distinct. Check the exact school, program, credential and applicable rules on IRCC before committing.

Do I need a new permit when changing schools?

A school change can require a new study permit application. Confirm the current instructions before transferring or starting at another institution.
